Ear Irrigation
Ear Irrigation (Syringing)
What is ear irrigation?
Ear irrigation is performed for the purpose of removing soft wax from the external ear canal, usually due to wax being impacted on the ear drum. Irrigation is performed using an electronic irrigator sending a gentle jet of warm water into the outer ear canal to gently wash away soft wax. This process used to be known as ear syringing, which is no longer readily available in the majority of GP surgeries.
When is ear irrigation required?
Ear wax (Cerumen) is a build up of sebum, dead cells, hair, sweat and foreign materials. It is a normal physiological substance which protects the ear canal. The quantity produced varies greatly between individuals. If a greater amount of ear wax is produced and becomes impacted, it can cause: hearing loss, tinnitus, itchiness and general discomfort. Impacted earwax can be treated with ear drops, ear softeners and ear irrigation. Seek advice if you have any of the above symptoms - we can help!
